Wildlife Wednesday: Turtles

8 in 8 AOA Poster Santa Fe River High Springs Florida

🧐 Did you know that turtles along the Santa Fe River in the southeastern United States can live well over 30 years? They’re living their best lives, basking in the sun on logs, rocks, or even the riverbank, soaking up those glorious rays to stay warm and active. 🌞

They’re omnivores, happily munching on plants, insects, and small aquatic critters. Turtles are known for their intelligence and unique feeding methods. Wood turtles, for example, are observed stomping their feet on the ground in a rhythmic manner. This clever behavior mimics rainfall, tricking earthworms to come to the surface where they become an easy meal. This not only showcases their problem-solving abilities but also their adaptation to the freshwater river environments where they live.

❤️ Their love lives? Oh, it's a mix of courtship and care! Males will impress females with elaborate courtship rituals like gentle nipping and shell tapping. Once paired up, females dig their nests along the riverbank to lay a clutch of eggs, ensuring the next generation is ready to explore the river when they hatch.

🐢Turtles are nature's serene river companions, reminding us to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. 🌿

Chestnuts

WW: Chestnuts

Chestnuts are a unique, nutrient-dense survival crop and a highly valued addition to home food forests and sustainable agriculture. Unlike most traditional nuts like pecans and walnuts, chestnuts are naturally low in fat (roughly 1–2 grams per 100-gram serving) and rich in complex carbohydrates (about 53 grams per 100-gram serving), offering a soft, mildly sweet texture closer to a potato. A 100-gram edible portion of roasted chestnuts provides approximately 240 calories and 3–4 grams of protein.
