Ruth B. Kirby Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park: A Natural Treasure in North Florida
Located just south of High Springs in Gilchrist County, Ruth B. Kirby Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park is home to one of Florida's most impressive freshwater springs. Opened as Florida's newest state park in 2017, the park protects more than 400 acres of natural landscapes, including crystal-clear springs, wetlands, and upland forests.
The park's centerpiece is the second-magnitude Gilchrist Blue Spring, which produces an average of approximately 44 million gallons of water per day. The spring maintains a constant temperature of about 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making it a popular destination for swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking.
In addition to the main spring, visitors can explore several smaller springs within
the park, including Little Blue Spring, Kiefer Spring, and Johnson Spring, all connected by spring runs that flow into the nearby Santa Fe River. These clear waters support a diverse ecosystem that includes fish, turtles, wading birds, and other native Florida wildlife.
The park features boardwalks, nature trails, picnic facilities, and launch areas for paddlers. Kayakers and canoeists can access the Santa Fe River and experience one of North Central Florida's most scenic spring-fed waterways.
Today, Ruth B. Kirby Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park serves as both a recreational destination and an important conservation area, helping protect Florida's groundwater resources and natural spring ecosystems for future generations.
